| The only man who spoke about the creation of male and female was the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), and this is one of the miracles and proofs of the truth of Islam. How could it be otherwise, when he was the Messenger of the One who created male and female? The purified Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) contains hadiths concerning the man’s and woman’s fluids (semen) and their effect on resemblance or determining the sex of the child. Among the most authentic of these texts is what was narrated by Umm Sulaym (may God be pleased with her), who asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about a woman who sees what a man sees in a dream. He said, “Yes, then let her perform ghusl (ritual purification).” Umm Sulaym asked, “Is this possible?” He replied, “Yes, so how is the resemblance determined? The man’s fluid is white and thick, and the woman’s fluid is yellow and thin. Whichever is dominant or comes first will determine the resemblance.” Other narrations in the collections of Muslim, Ahmad, and Abu Dawud indicate that the dominance or precedence of the two fluids is a cause of resemblance to a relative or, by God’s permission, the child will be male or female. |
