Can we determine the sex of the fetus before pregnancy?
The only man who spoke about this 1448 years ago and was correct was Muhammad (peace be upon him).
How could he have known this unless the Creator, the Almighty, who created male and female, had taught him?
| It is narrated in the Prophetic tradition that the physical resemblance between a child and its parents depends on which fluid predominates. If the man’s fluid predominates, the child will resemble his paternal uncles (or the resemblance will be to the father). If the woman’s fluid predominates, the child will resemble his maternal uncles (or the resemblance will be to the mother). Prophetic Guidance and the Meaning of Precedence: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that the man’s fluid is white and thick, while the woman’s fluid is yellow and thin. Precedence here refers to the strength and effect of ejaculation at the time of conception. | 🔹Is it possible to predict the sex of a fetus? 🔻Yes, the Prophet’s guidance addressed the issue of determining the sex of the fetus (male or female) and linked it to the concept of “dominance and supremacy” between the two fluids. This is explicitly stated in the hadith of Thawban in Sahih Muslim, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The man’s fluid is white, and the woman’s fluid is yellow. When they combine, if the man’s fluid prevails over the woman’s, they will have a male child by the permission of God. And if the woman’s fluid prevails over the man’s, they will have a female child by the permission of God.” The Jurisprudential and Linguistic Interpretation of the Hadiths Scholars who have studied the hadiths (such as Ibn al-Qayyim and Ibn Hajar) have distinguished between two terms found in the narrations: Precedence (determines resemblance): Whichever fluid is released and mixed first determines the child’s resemblance to that parent and their relatives (paternal or maternal uncles). Predominance (determines sex): Whichever fluid is dominant in terms of strength, quantity, and chemical and biological properties determines the sex (male or female). The Four Possibilities: Based on this combination, the fetus may be born male but resemble its maternal uncles (if the man’s fluid is dominant in strength but precedes the woman’s fluid in terms of timing), and vice versa. According to Modern Science and Medicine Modern scientists and physicians have striven to interpret this dominance from the perspective of embryology and genetics: The Decisive Role of the Man: Medically, the man is responsible for determining the sex because he carries the X chromosome (for females and the Y chromosome for males), while the woman’s egg carries only the X chromosome. The environment of the uterus (the upper part): The upper part is scientifically explained by the suitability of the environment of the woman’s secretions (acidity and alkalinity) and the activity of the seminal fluid; as the alkaline environment promotes male sperm (Y), while the acidic environment promotes female sperm (X), which is consistent with the idea of “dominance and upper part” mentioned in the hadith. |
